Welcome to Norther Stars Summit
The focus of our first summit in 2020 is "On The Job" face painting education. We are working hand in hand with our master painters and business leaders to ensure that skills are developed during each workshop. We want you to come out a better painter and have new or enhanced skills in place for your next gig.
Many face and body art conventions pile on the workshops and force the attendees to choose between several classes occurring simultaneously. Our schedule takes the FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) off your plate, carefully planned to give everyone the opportunity to attend all workshops and jams. Our venue has wonderful hotel rooms and workshop space to boot. Mark your calendar

Gretchen Fleener
Gretchen Fleener began face painting 25 years ago at Valleyfair for minimum wage plus $0.20 per design. Little did she know that after earning a degree in Industrial Design and working as a retail display designer for Best Buy corporate, she would end up face painting full-time! Gretchen now owns and operates Paintertainment, an entertainment agency and online retailer of face and body art supplies, and the MN State Fair’s Glitter Glamper. Gretchen has published 7 books on the subject of face painting, maintains a blog, monthly e-newsletter and YouTube channel, and is the editor of Wet Paint Magazine. She loves to teach workshops in the U.S. and abroad, and hosts monthly paint jams at her home in Mound!
Where would you ever use jewelry painting on the job? Well, knowing how to paint a gem can come in very handy if you forget to bring your rhinestones, if you get that super picky princess who wants a shape or color you don’t have, or if you simply need a smaller or larger gem than you have in your collection of stencils or rhinestones. Painted decolletage jewelry is Gretchen’s go-to design idea when the party mom sits in her chair and says “make something pretty!” Nothing makes your client feel beautiful and special like a one-of-a-kind decolletage design! Being able to fully customize a gem will enable you to match any outfit. Painted bracelets are also a great idea for those kids and adults who don’t want anything on their face!

Gretchen’s jewelry class will walk you through painting gemstones, beads and chains utilizing a combination of both jaw-dropping realism AND real-world, on-the-job application techniques. First Gretchen will take you step by step through one super realistic looking gemstone, enabling you to grasp the underlying ideas of realism, so you’ll better understand how to simplify and apply those rules to quicker, on-the-job designs. Using what you’ve learned, we’ll then paint another style of gem with a facet design that’s super easy to remember how to do on the job, and can be adjusted to fit within whatever time frame you have.
Next, Gretchen will show you how to turn your stand-alone gem into an exquisite piece of jewelry or crown in less time than you think! She’ll share her speed tips and tricks for making super fast yet realistic looking details like beads, round gems in settings, and itty bitty diamond accents. As we turn our gem into jewelry, she’ll also demonstrate how to make realistic drop shadows, so your jewelry really looks like it’s sitting above the skin! Have you tried painting jewelry but something just doesn’t look right? No worries! We will also be looking at visual examples of some of the most common mistakes people make when attempting realistic jewelry, and how to fix them. If we have extra time in class, or we spill over into our jam session, Gretchen will take a poll to see what YOU would like to walk through with her, from the large assortment of gems and chains in her jewelry book!
Tools Gretchen will be using

Financial wizard Warren Buffett once said, “The more you learn, the more you earn.” But it doesn’t matter how much you earn if you are being weighed down by debt. This is a class on keeping and growing the precious money you make. This class is for people (especially artists and entertainers) who are ready to have a breakthrough with money by learning to eliminate all debt (including your mortgage) in 5-7 years, and how to build a future based on joy instead of fear, so that you can keep on entertaining. If you are tired of financial stress, or if you get financial advice from your grocer, or if you have been meaning to pay off that debt, or if you are worried about your financial future, this class is for you. (*Note… no personal information will be shared in the class*)

Know Your Stencils by Clayton James
Clayton James
In this class Clayton will teach several techniques to getting perfect stencil transfers for your face paint designs. He’ll go over sponges, pouncers, daubers, Kabuki brushes and even airbrush.
You will leave this class more confident in your stencil applications and know what to do when things aren’t looking correct. He’ll explain which techniques work best for different kinds of stencils, tips and tricks you may not have thought of, as well as proper stencil placement to work with the flow of your designs. During the Jam he’ll spend as much one on one time doing up close demos and answering as many questions as possible. Oh, and there will be home made peanut brittle and chocolate dipped toffee. |
Master Painter Jams
After each master painter teaches their workshops, enjoy an hour long jam with them. Go over specific techniques, get direct feedback on your work. This is a great time to ask them just about anything. They are here to help you learn and grow as a professional face painter.
Games
If there’s one thing we know about face and body painters, it’s that they play as hard as they work – and that’s why we’re capping it all off with a host of hilarious games and challenges. We can’t give away all of the details just yet (sometimes we need a few fun surprises), but we can tell you that there will be two games that will require some paint and brushes.
We’re also bringing a Particularly Paint-y Family Feud to our Summit! Grab a team and get ready to put your brain to work as you battle your way through questions and answers that just might leave you in stitches.

Jams
The only bad thing about having this much fun with our painty pals is that it must come to an end. Nowhere is this more apparent than during the creative painting jams. Time just seems to slip away too quickly. We learn so much from each other, from the simplest “may I try that brush” to “OMG! What brand of blue is that!” The way we can learn and support each other during jam time is just amazing.
For that reason, we’ve built in ample time for jamming with your peers; we know that this is where a lot of the most valuable experiences will happen.

About
Northern Stars Summit for Face and Body Art was founded by a graphic designer who saw a need for community and education in face painting in the upper midwest.
The thirst to learn new face painting skills in Minnesota is so high, and Northern Stars Summit is here to provide that education for new, intermediate and advanced face painters.
We aim to provide a new, creative approach to face painting conventions. Our workshops are set up to provide ample time to practice. Workbooks are created to guide, practice, and remember what is taught during workshops.
We know the importance of jam time. Northern Stars Summit has set up specific jam time with the master painters as well as general sessions of jam time allowing each attendee to work on their specific needs or get inspiration from surrounding attendees.
Our face painting community is such a wonderful group. We support each other in so many ways that when a face painting convention is in town, it’s like a family reunion. Its a place to refresh, connect and grow as a face painting entertainer.
